Pearls, according to Indian mythology, were dewdrops from heaven that fell into the sea.
Widely
used as medicine in Europe until the 17th century, the Arabs and
Persians believed pearls were a cure for various kinds of illness,
including insanity.  The ancient Chinese  also used pearls as medicine,
believing that they represented wealth, power and longevity.
Pearls
today are associated with calming properties, whilst also enhancing
purity, integrity and loyalty.  Plus they allegedly aid digestion!
